Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout

Gold’s Gym Cardio Workout is a personal training experience for the Wii. It offers a more intense cardio workout than most Wii fitness games and includes exercises such as cardio boxing, running, and jump roping. The game also includes Wii Balance Board compatible exercises, such as squats, back and abdominal training and push ups, to name a few. The game tracks your progress and maintains a calendar of your exercise activity. It also tracks the calories that you burn for each exercise session. You can follow a prepared workout, or you can choose exercises a la carte. When you select a prepared workout you get a virtual trainer who’ll talk you through the exercises. The on-screen instructor teaches you how to properly throw different kinds of punches: jabs, hooks, upper cuts, cross punches, as well as defensive techniques like weaving, and dodging. You go through training for each kind of punch, and you can even take a series of exams to see how well you do. The difficulty evolves as your fitness level increases.

For controls, the game will allow you to use either two Wii remotes, or the Wii remote and Nunchuk combination, however, the game seems to recognized movements using two Wii remotes the best. The only downfalls in this game are the limited song selection for workouts and that there is no multiplayer mode–you have to do this all alone. That aside, this is a very affordable game and a great upper body and cardio workout.
The game is rated “E” for everyone with one content descriptor, “comic Mischief”.

About Us

The Exergames Unlocked project includes a multi-state team of accomplished media education researchers, exercise physiologists, medical professionals and doctoral students. Contributing members are researchers in their fields and have helped launch the use of exergames as tools to combat obesity in their communities and beyond. New Mexico State University researchers and their partners have been funded to research the impact of exergames, develop specific recommendations for exergame use, and implement exergaming programs. As part of that project, this website provides access to resources based on research, sample projects, and input from the exergaming community.
